Gourmet Magazine's October 2003 Restaurant Issue included a pullout "Guide to America's Best Restaurants." The booklet, which covered 20 U.S. cities, was written by Ruth Reichl, editor in chief of Gourmet Magazine, as well as several of the magazine's food critics, who anonymously ate at restaurants all across the country. Their choices were not confined to the "top" restaurants in each city. According to the magazine, "Everyone wants great food, but it's that something extra that draws patrons to a place again and again. Whether it's the right environment to help clinch a business deal, the buzz of a new restaurant that's the talk of the town, or a personal favorite restaurant we'd choose to eat at if we had only one night to spend in a city. Also not to be forgotten are those comfortable neighborhood gems, casual yet delicious places for kicking back and relaxing."
